Support groups bring together people facing similar issues. Members of support groups often share experiences and advice. It can be helpful just getting to talk with other people who are in the same boat. It can be incredibly therapeutic to offer your support to others. Actively participating in a support group is a great way to help others and in return help yourself!
Benefits of participating in support groups may include:
Feeling less lonely, isolated or judged
Gaining a sense of empowerment and control
Improved coping skills and adjustment
An opportunity to talk openly and honestly about your feelings
Reduction in distress, depression or anxiety
A clearer understanding of what to expect with your situation
Learning about new research
Getting practical advice or information about available options
Making new friends
NOSSA has several support group options available for members. You may share anonymously on the internet through NOSSA Forums, NOSSA Social Media Websites, or through private e-mail. NOSSA also offers in-person support groups and meetings.
Solidarity
We share common values. It is wrong to look down on yourself for being short. It is also wrong for other people to treat you poorly because you are short statured. By joining together with NOSSA (an established society for short statured people), you are creating a strong community of like-minded people. You are sending a very powerful message to the world. You are joining together with others to send the message that heightism and height discrimination will no longer be tolerated and you will support your fellow short statured brothers and sisters. Promote the acceptance of short stature in society. Unite to oppose heightism! Bring more attention to the issues that we face. You are no longer alone when it comes to the issues you face as a short statured person.
Fellowship
Meet new friends through meetings, online interactions, and social events. Volunteer to serve as a leader in the organization. Join us as we protest a heightist organization. Call a member when you need somebody to talk to. Take part in our singles group. NOSSA is comprised of a great group of people who honestly care about one another. NOSSA also offers an emergency assistance program for members in need of food, shelter, or crisis intervention (when funding available). Your fellow members will be here for you!
